Sentinels are watchers and guardians. These Sentinels, created out of discarded materials and just under life-size, watch over the oceans and fragile land systems, observing loss of habitat, melting sea ice, destructive mining operations and human activities. They stand as witnesses, guard posts, reminders of the colors of the sea.
The small 3-D constructions are built out of metal parts and other debris that I collect from alleys and streets. I'm especially pleased when I find crushed tailpipes, with their organic curvilinear forms.
These are sketches that inform my visual thinking. The element of play, the arranging of shapes, and the interaction between the forms help me set up rhythms in my paintings. These are now informing my nearly life-size Sentinel Series.
